Our holiday movie theme continues. The Christmas classics are in full swing on all the family channels, so I thought I'd start with our classic Christmas cookie cutters.

Frosty the Snowman

In this lunch : In an Easy Lunch Box
  • Frosty - Ham and provolone
  • Snowman marshmallows
  • Frosty cheez-its
  • Carrots
  • Grinch - grapes, marshmallows and strawberries
Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss

“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”
Dr. Seuss, Happy Birthday to You!

Saturday is Dr. Seuss's Birthday and Read Across America you can find all kinds of printables online. Need lunch ideas or other fun snacks? Check out this linky at Bento Bloggers & Friends for all kinds of Seussical wonderment.

The monkey's classes haven't done their Seuss days yet and to be honest I've been overwhelmed with commitments lately. So while I had high aspirations, I fell a bit flat on delivery. He is our all time favorite author though so here's a beginning and hopefully this robot squirrel gets her groove back soon.

Green Eggs and Ham

When tasked to pick his favorite Dr. Seuss book, Green monkey of course picked Green Eggs & Ham. He would not, could not eat ham today, so his is a PB&J. Dressed up with green Americolor marker and a slice of cheese, what can I say I aim to please. He wanted a green egg to eat, so we dyed it and poached it and wrapped it up neat. Green honeydew to chew and chew, and some green broccoli for garnish but that simply would not do. He would not eat his broccoli, or the yolk of his green egg. He would not eat them here or there, he would not eat them anywhere. What he did do was bring his book, and read it to his class, so they could look.

Oh the Places You'll Go

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...”
Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You'll Go!

For little Blue monkey it was clear to pick Oh the Places you'll Go, to know him is to love him, be he never goes slow. First he raced down carrot roads in apple and grape mobiles, pretty rough terrain for delicate wheels. Next it was up up and away, he just could not help but fly away today. When you can't decide which way to go, round and round the world wherever the winds may blow.

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas

“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!”
Dr. Seuss,
How the Grinch Stole Christmas

One last lunch, then I'll let you be. The Grinch is one from Christmas past but still very dear to me. I get a bit grinchy from time to time, hide in my cave, and yes sometimes whine. Our lunchy Grinch is made of turkey and cheese, on a spinach tortilla with fruity hat that whipped up like a breeze.

"The Grinch: The nerve of those Whos. Inviting me down there - on such short notice! Even if I wanted to go my schedule wouldn't allow it. 4:00, wallow in self pity; 4:30, stare into the abyss; 5:00, solve world hunger, tell no one; 5:30, jazzercize; 6:30, dinner with me - I can't cancel that again; 7:00, wrestle with my self-loathing... I'm booked. Of course, if I bump the loathing to 9, I could still be done in time to lay in bed, stare at the ceiling and slip slowly into madness. But what would I wear? "

“So be sure when you step, Step with care and great tact. And remember that life's A Great Balancing Act. And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed) Kid, you'll move mountains.”
Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You'll Go!

Ho Ho Holiday Hop - Week 3 of 3

The Bento Bloggers & Friends are holiday blog hopping!
But we're doing things a little different this time - we're spreading the bento love out over 3 weeks - both to keep the fun going, and to keep the hops a little shorter, since our group has grown so big! This is week 3 of 3 so if you missed week 1 or 2 please visit the link above and hop through those as well they are fantastic!

The holidays are drawing near and while for most of us that means a to-do list a mile long. In all the hustle and bustle, shopping, wrapping, stamping, mailing, and elf on the shelf moving, it can down right make the season a little Grinchy.

No matter what this time of year means to you and your family I hope that you will enjoy hopping through all of these fabulous bento artists and spread some magic too. Keep hopping until you land back in our stocking. You'll find the link at the end of this post.

It's no secret we're TB and movie junkies, and Christmas is no exception. For the last few weeks I've been sneaking our favorite movies into the monkeys lunches.

A Christmas Story - It's just not Christmas for me until I watch it, and this year the monkeys watched it with me over and over.

Here's my lunch: Fra-gee-lay it must be Italian! On top of my usual tuna salad I added a 2 cheese leg lamp, a piece of toast and used a cookie cutter painted with food gel for the title, and of course fragile pretzels. I couldn't resist a little Ohh Ffffudge for dessert too.

Of course Green monkey is only in kindergarten so he got a more G-rated scene here's Flick stuck to the flag pole. He was on a bagel kick that week so it's a jelly and butter bagel, babybel cheese, fruit leather, marshmallows, a strawberry tongue, a pirouette pole, and some holiday tortilla chips in the background.

So what are the kids watching this time of year when not indulging me? The ABC family 25 days of Christmas movies. Which bring us to The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. On top of holiday tortilla chips, a spinach and herb tortilla with turkey and cheese Grinch with fruit leather and cheese hat, tree watermelons, and carrots for the reindeer.

This week we added a new Christmas special to our repertoire Spongebob squarepants.
Santa Spongebob ham and cheese, string cheese arms, babybel Santa hat, holiday goldfish backdrop, square cucumbers, and a peppermint peep partridge in an apple pear tree. Took a few liberties there :)

Patrick the red nosed reindeer - Ham, roast beef and cheese, pretzel antlers, babybel snail reindeer, holiday goldfish, star salad, and orange octopus.

We've been doing holiday lunches since Thanksgiving so feel free to click back through previous posts after the hop for more ideas from Festivus to Rudolph, and I'll have new ones up tomorrow from this week.

December 3-6 lunches

Where did this year go? How is it December already?  Only how many shopping days left? Ugh shopping do I have to? I don't wanna. I much prefer playing with our food and elf. Here's what we made this week in lunches.

Monday - So usually I ask the monkeys what they want the night before around dinner time. Green Monkeys told me he wanted a kangaroo. No rhyme no reason just a kangaroo. SO I stare at my cookie cutter stash and tetris the shapes in my head, figure out a plan, then we get up and he says "No wait I want Jack Frost"....Really?...Really? ....Seriously? Sure bubs let me whip that right up. The Guardians (See I really can spell just not at 6am in a rush) Jack Frost Turkey and cheese. Yes I know I flipped the A and U while tossing the pretzels in last minute but I was rushing. On the upside he's in kindergarten and wouldn't be able to read that anyway, and they were all jumbled up when he opened it to eat it anyway, so no harm done to his developing I.Q. Santa strawberries with marshmallow and candy eyes. Babybel Tooth Fairy on salad.

Tuesday - Once again Green monkey asked for a Kangaroo (I'm really starting to wonder why he's obsessed with it)...but I have already thought it out so no worries....right? Uh uh morning alarms go off and he's up. After playing find the elf (his main reason for getting out of bed this month) he says he just wants a bagel for lunch. That's it?....You want a bagel?..Oh I'll give you a bagel....Festivus style HA! Sometimes mommys just need to work through their issues and so with that I air my grievances of indecision, he's lucky he's cute...For any non-Seinfeldian readers watch and enjoy Festivus as told by George Kastanza. So he got a warm bagel with jelly and butter, a pirouette pole, tree watermelons, and boulder cucumbers for feats of strength.

Blue monkey was much more fun he wanted Tthe Grinch, our elf had read it to his friends a few days before. Turkey and cheese in a spinach and herb tortilla, fruit leather hat, and holiday tortilla chips. Watermelon trees, and some carrots for his dog-reindeer.

Wednesday - Green monkey is still on his bagel kick so I decided to merry it up a bit. Rudolph jelly and butter bagel. Red grape nose, marshmallow eyes, fruit leather antlers, green grapes, and carrots for the reindeer food. Green monkey thought this was perfect since we had watched Rudolph the Red nose Reindeer the night before. See Festivus was a healing experience...right back to lunches :)

Thursday - Green monkey still wants bagels, and he wants another of those pirouette cookies....so naturally it made me think of Flick from A Christmas Story which we've watched a few times in the last week. Jelly and butter bagel Flick, strawberry tongue, stuck to a pirouette pole, babybel nose and ears, marshmallow eyes, Fruit leather hat...and it needed support so I stuck a couple holiday tortilla chips under it. Tongue strawberries and veggie straw poles.

Blue monkey was busy watching Team Umizoomi as he does most mornings so I decided to make them for him today since I hadn't thought up his lunch yet. Millie, Geo and Bot turkey and cheese sandwiches with fruit leather and candy eyes. strawberries, and a fun cucumber shape puzzle each slice has a different shape cut out of the middle and set to the side.

This week was a good learning week. I figured out how to play with a bagel in 3 different lunches. I got faster at prep having to think on the fly in the morning. I learned not to spell before my morning coffee :) I hope you all had a great week too. Thanks for stopping by I appreciate all the follows and the comments.
