Doctor Who for 3

So keeping with the "new shiny bento tools" theme, I recently got a Doctor Who ice tray from Think Geek. But ice is a bit wasted on my kids who still use cups with lids. So then I thought hmm maybe cheese, no that's a LOT of cheese, then I thought oooh jello, no jigglers! my big green monkey wanted to try strawberry applesauce too so here's how the experiments went.

Daleks! Exterminate!

In this lunch : In an Easy Lunch Box
  • Dalek sandwiches - red is a ham sandwich blue is jelly sandwich
  • Grapes and carrots with a Dalek pick ( My awesome friend Princess sent me all these Doctor who thingys to play with)
  • Dalek - Frozen strawberry applesauce - Fail - melted by lunch time, bonus fail I forgot to send a spoon, but his teachers got him one so he could try his applesauce, still not a fan even when it was a dalek, at least he tried it.
  • TARDIS - Jello jigglers - WIN! This held its shape and was a bit wibbly wobbly fun. So now I've pretty much made blue jigglers out of every ice tray we have muhaha!
Saved by Doctor Who?

In this lunch : In an Easy Lunch Box
  • TARDIS - Jelly sandwich
  • Bow tie - Turkey sandwich with 10th Doctor pick
  • Grapes and Carrot with Cyberman pick (Thanks Princess!)
  • Dalek - Frozen strawberry dalek - also double fail, again thawed by lunch, and bonus fail since he brought his lunch he sat down, in doing so was not allowed to get up and go get a spoon because yeah I forgot his too, I'm nothing if not fair and balance.
  • TARDIS - WIN - He loved his wibbly wobbly TARDIS and wanted more after school, but alas all gone so I'll be sure to make more
Doctor Who?

In this lunch : In an Easy Lunch Box
  • Weeping Angel (Just for you Princess Don't Blink!) - Ham and Turkey in a carb smart tortilla
  • 4th Doctor - Grape tomatoes and carrots
  • 11th Doctor and Rory and Amy - Red, green, and black grapes (But not sour HA)
  • Dalek - Jello Jigglers
  • TARDIS - Jello Jigglers
I used one 6oz box of blue raspberry jello, added 2 cups boiling water, 2 oz unflavored gelatin, and stirred until dissolved. Once poured into various containers (I'm no Martha it was messy) chilled and set for 3 hours...or over night until I packed lunch this morning ;) More jiggly blue fun to come.

Monkeys and Me April 13th lunches

So tired today, and I thought yesterday was Monday, is there such a thing as a case of the Tuesday's? If so I have it. But alas we still have to eat.

Daleks on the run
This weekend marked Green monkey's 4th kids fun run. I am so proud of him for trying. He's not a bundle of energy like little blue so it really is an effort for him. He did fantastic. This time it was the Blue Bell Fun run and all participants got free ice cream at the end.

In this lunch :
  • Peanut butter and jelly Daleks with pretzel and sprinkle details
  • Grapes with a bugle as an ice cream cone
  • Bugles

To the moon
Little blue has been exceedingly picky so I made 2 different sandwiches hoping he'd eat at least one of them...and they look cute together.

In this lunch :
  • Astronaut - peanut butter and jelly with tic tac button
  • NASA Space shuttle - Ham and cheese with fruit leather NASA
  • Smoke after the launch - pirates booty
  • Upper right - Carrots
  • Lower right - Grapes and strawberries
Boston we Remember
As a member of the running community we joined forces and are showing our support in light of yesterday's tragedy in Boston. While it is not unusual for me to be seen wearing a race shirt, today I added a Bib for Boston to it. I ran 12.85 miles today, in Texas heat and full sun it was hard but I kept going, had to stop due to sick kiddo, but would like to get 26.2 miles in this week. I know it won't change what happened, but they are in my thoughts and in my heart and this is what I can do to show support. The race was being dedicated to the victims of the tragedy in Newton. So many acts of senseless violence. When will humans learn to stop hurting each other and coexist in peace.

In this lunch :
  • Runner's with wings - Babybel cheese
  • Carrot and celery sticks
  • Crab stick and string cheese
  • Rose - leftover bento scrap of ham, and sugar snap peas

A Journey through lunch

This week was a ton of fun! We began our journey through time and space with a couple Doctor Who themes. The monkeys have been watching it a lot as we're catching up on the first few seasons on Netflix. I love having little whovians running around. Nothing like sitting at IHOP with 2 little monkeys saying "Exterminate" back and forth across the table in their best impression of a Dalek. So off we go then...

Monday - Doctor Who Exterminate! PB&J Dalek with cheddar cheese and a dried cherry. Another Dalek made from a baby carrot hovers above ready to exterminate the Doctor. The cucumber Slitheen have it out for him too. How will DW (Covering grapes and cucumbers) Doctor Who escape all these villains? Stay tuned!

Tuesday - Doctor Who TARDIS times 2. Both monkeys have school today so we continued our Whovian adventure. Traveling back many seasons with our graham cracker TARDIS. I frosted it like you would make a gingerbread house, halved some mini marshmallows for windows, and a jellybean for the light. PB&J K-9 modified because the monkeys hadn't gotten to this episode yet. I made it look like a toy version rather than as he appears in the episodes. Now that they've seen him then next would be a solid base not legs. Next I tried my hand and carving fruit so I carved strawberry roses for our favorite Doctor companion Rose (Thanks Youtube). Cassandra the last human is Monterrey jack cheese stretched over her carrot frame. This was a big hit and both monkeys wanted to keep going with the theme but there were other special days this week so look for the Doctor to return later, after all he can't just hang around here all day, Time Lords never stick around too long. Allonsy!

Wednesday - International Talk Like a Pirate Day! Yo Ho Yo Ho a pirates life for me. The wee scallywags were in for quite a treat today. They set sail decked out in their pirate shirts as did I as their fearless Cap'n. It was early release day at school but he was not going to miss this adventure. So we followed our monterrey jack cheese map from the stormy graham cracker seas, defeating Davey Jones lil smokie. Ham and cheese ship is carrying our babybel pirate and the sail is carrot stick, ham and cheese skull and cross bones. On a distant aisle he tracks a red apple parrot (very rare indeed as it was my first time to ever try carving an apple thanks youtube) I adapted it to use apple slices and made the head 2 pieces because the separate beak looked better. Low and behold our brave pirate made it to the pirates booty full of carrot coins. The pirate flag was from Make and Takes blog. After school we took a blog hop journey through pirate themed bentos across the webisphere thanks to Bento Bloggers & Friends. We started our journey at Keitha's Chaos you need to check them all out they are too cute!

Thursday - Teddy Bear Picnic - Today is teddy bear picnic day at little blue monkeys school, so both monkeys got to go on a teddy bear picnic with their lunches today. Based on the book The Teddy Bears Picnic by Jimmy Kennedy.  Our PB&J little boys are in teddy bear disguises this morning, for when they went into the spinach and celery leaf woods today they were in for a big surprise. They followed the cucumber and cheese paw prints and saw a bunch of grape and fruit twist balloons. The Teddy grahams and Gummy bears were having their picnic on their graham cracker blanket covered in fruit roll up and mini marshmallow slices. What do they eat at their picnic? Why dried berries of course .

We had such a fun week, thanks for traveling with us! We'll be back next week for more fun. Have a great weekend!
