Happy Presidents Day

Today is Presidents' day, where we celebrate President Lincoln and Washington's birthdays. Abraham Lincoln's birthday is on February 12th, George Washington's birthday is on February 22nd, but its a Federal holiday to celebrate on the third Monday in February every year regardless of the date. Did you know there are 2 other presidents born in February? William Harrison is on February 9th, and Ronald Reagan is on February 6th. I only attempted Lincoln and Washington for today's lunch, last year I tried to draw Mount Rushmore.

Happy Valentines Day

Happy Valentines Day! So today was a Friday which is usually when Green monkey buys lunch, since I knew I would see him at his party anyway, it was ok to let it go and not pack today. He's had Valentines Day themed lunches all week anyway.

100th Day of School!

Hidden within the week filled with Valentines day parties is the 100th day of school for our 1st grader. Obviously they didn't push it out to account for the recent bad weather days. On the upside I actually didn't miss it this year. Last year, again caught up in valentines day prep activities I missed it and had to celebrate 101st day with him instead ...he didn't mind. :)

Tonight I hijacked one of his shirts, and added 100 stickers to it. I also packed him a baggie with 100 pennies because it just made cents buh dum cha.

Winter Olympics Blog Hop

Today is the opening ceremony for the 2014 Winter Olympics being held in Sochi Russia. To celebrate some of the bloggers at Bento Bloggers and Friends have teamed up to kick off the winter games with a blog hop. Once you've slalomed down these slopes. Click the button at the end of this post and keep hopping through all the rings until you glide all the way down the slopes back here.

Every year they have different mascots for the games. Some years they have been quite odd. This year they kept it simple with the polar bear, the hare and the leopard. I chose the hare the busiest of the winter animals because I can relate ha ha.

"The Hare is the busiest creature in the winter forest. Her friends are always amazed: just how does she find the time to do so much! For the little doe hare not only studies at the Forest Academy (where she gets excellent grades) and helps her Mum in the family restaurant, “The Forest Dam”, but also takes part in all manner of sporting events. The little doe hare trusts her friends so much that she doesn’t have any secrets. She simply loves sport with all her heart. And she also loves to sing and dance." ~ Sochi 2014 Winter Games Photo Stream Flickr

National Nutella Day

Well we were on break yesterday so we didn't pack lunch. We couldn't let nutella day pass us by without a little lunchy tribute though. Only one monkey has school this week and only for 2 days at that. At school they are celebrating Math day, an entire day with fun math activities. At home he is in love with our new puppy and wanted her in his lunch today. So we used all three themes in one lunch today.

National Nutella Day

In this lunch : In a laptop lunch box
  • 2x4=8 : Trader Joe's schoolhouse cookies
  • Puppy - Jelly sandwich
  • Bone - Nutelle sandwich

As You Wish

When you are lead by children don't expect themes to match or even make sense to our grown-up boxed in minds. They will always be fun though. Last week big green monkey requested a Doctor Who lunch after little guy got one the day before. Little Blue monkey was on the letter M at school so of course that means Mickey Mouse in this house.

Fastest Doctor Who
A quick cookie cutter Doctor Who and his TARDIS

In this lunch : In an Easy Lunchbox
  • TARDIS and Doctor Who - peanut butter and jelly sandwich
  • Honeydew
  • Celery with peanut butter
 M is for Mickey Mouse

In this lunch : In an Easy Lunchbox
  • Mickey - Stamped peanut butter and jelly sandwich
  • Carrots with Mickey ring
  • Grapes and M honeydew melon
We have busy days like everyone else. Some lunches I spend more time on than others. The monkeys love them no matter what. A simple cookie cutter or toast stamp is all it really takes to turn the same old sandwich into a little hug at lunch time.

We are on winter break this week, which means no school for 3 days for my big green monkey and no school all week for me and little blue monkey. So as long as we're home binging on video games, netflix, and enjoying our new puppy. I thought I could share a couple of my lunches from last month.

  • Mixed green salad with ham arrows
  • Leftover ham scraps from kids lunches and cheese arrow
  • Grapes and honeydew arrow heads

Groundhog Day

Yesterday was Groundhog day and a Sunday so I didn't make lunch daddy did. Today I made up for it with a quick little groundhog treat even though we are on winter break for 3 days this week. Super fast and easy and the monkeys loved it.

Unfortunately for everyone up north the famous groundhog weather prognosticator Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow yesterday morning, which means six more weeks of winter. Down here in Texas it means we'll be unseasonably chilly once a week or so before returning to the 70's, but for my friends and family up north they are in for 6 more weeks being buried under tons of snow and temperatures below zero. Feel free to visit ;)

Groundhog

In this lunch :
  • Groundhog Sandwich - Peanut butter and jelly cute with a CuteZCute cutter, peanut butter ears, candy eyes, mini M&M nose, sprinkles for whiskers
  • Groundhog Dessert - Chocolate pudding, Milano dark chocolate cookie, candy eyes, and edible marker details.
Last year we were home too so they also aren't packed lunch but turned out pretty cute. You can read the original post here which was also part of a cool linky party so click through all the fun.

Famed groundhog weather prognosticator Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow Sunday morning, foretelling six more weeks of winter.
6 more weeks of winter or ...an early spring?

Famed groundhog weather prognosticator Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow Sunday morning, foretelling six more weeks of winter.

And of course the day wouldn't be complete without watching Groundhog Day with Bill Murray, a classic. :)

Be careful out there its a doozy this year!
